What is LNG

LNG, or Liquefied Natural Gas, is primarily Methane (natural gas) condensed into liquid form by cooling it below its dew point to -161°C (-260°F) at atmospheric pressure.

LNG Value Chain

An LNG supply chain consists of four main links − natural gas Exploration and Production; Treatment and Liquefaction; Shipping; and Receiving and Distribution.

Extraction of oil, natural gas and produced water from natural reservoirs.

Liquefaction converts natural gas into liquid form by using multi-stage refrigeration processes at liquefaction plants which reduces its volume, thus allowing for easy transportation to centres of demand.

LNG is loaded onto specially designed ships built around insulated cargo tanks to keep the LNG in liquid state throughout the voyage.

An LNG receiving terminal comprises LNG storage tanks and regasification facilities that convert LNG back to its gaseous state by the application of heat, also known as vaporisation

Viable solution is to transport Liquid LNG using insulated cargo tanks and regasified at destination for best results

Benefits of LNG Use

Burning natural gas produces much lower carbon emissions when compared to other fossil fuels, such as oil or coal.

Natural gas is available in abundance. According to some estimates, the world′s oil reserves will last for another 50-odd years, while natural gas reserves can last much longer.

Stability & Growth of LNG Use

With advancements in power-generation technology, it is much more efficient to use natural gas to generate electricity than oil or coal. LNG is less than half the weight of water. LNG is only flammable if the amount of gas is 5-15% in air.

LNG is used mostly

  • for electricity generation,
  • as feed for fertilizer companies,
  • for residential cooking,
  • as fuel for transportation.

LNG is an excellent solution to help industrial players bring their facilities into line with current environmental regulations, with these regulations set to become even stricter in the future.

E.g.: Thermal power plant fuelled by natural gas rather than coal associated with:

  • an 81% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2),
  • an 8% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx),
  • a 100% reduction in sulphur (SO2) and fine particle emissions.

Comparing the cost of LNG and Renewables

LNG expressed in $/MMBtu with the equivalent cost of wind, solar and a combination of wind and solar, also derived in $/MMBtu, (i.e., to get break even a wind / solar capacity factor of 37% is required over the period of 20years).

As long as the delivered cost of LNG is below the break-even prices for renewables (expressed in $/MMBtu), generating electricity using LNG would be less expensive.

Though technology development reduces the cost for solar or wind power, peak operating times for wind and solar systems occur at different times of the day and year as witnessed globally keeping the prices less competitive. A study shows hybrid system might better match with demand than wind or solar PV facilities by themselves but still the Land Area catered to setup similar plant using gas-fired power plants is lower.

LNG Terminals – East Corridor – ON HOLD

a. Two FSRU-based LNG import terminals are planned on India′s eastern coast – one each at Kakinada and Krishnapatnam ports, both in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

b. Andhra Pradesh Gas Distribution Corporation (APGDC), GDF SUEZ, Royal Dutch Shell, and GAIL (India) Ltd will develop a floating LNG terminal in Kakinada Deep Water Seaport in Kakinada.

c. The Kakinada LNG terminal will use a state-of-the-art FSRU with a peak capacity of 5 million tonnes/year with the provision to double the capacity.

d. The project never got off the ground as the foreign partners insisted on GAIL getting firm customers of imported LNG first, sources said, adding that GAIL however felt it cannot guarantee any minimum offtake in the absence of indicative price of imported gas.

e. Indian Oil Corp (IOC) is setting up a 5 mtpa LNG import terminal at Ennore to cater to demand in the State while Adani Group is leading a joint venture to set up another similar capacity import facility at Dhamra in Odisha.

f. The terminals had already led to Petronet LNG – the nation′s largest importer of liquefied natural gas, shelving its plans to build a 5 mtpa facility at Gangavaram in Andhra Pradesh.

g. All three above terminals are also on hold due to absence of potential buyers for imported gas.
